The pause to listen before the repetition of the closing lines slows down the close, obliging the reader to patience, and in the process enhancing tension. True, there’s a mild risk of melodrama (accentuated by quoting the passage in isolation) but also a sense of Joyce slowing before the finish line. He knows how and where the story will end—he’s already written it in the earlier draft, after all—now he’s savoring it, pacing it more deliberately. We might understand expansion as the form patience takes on the page.
